Freshman Year: Freshman Football Game

Freshman year was very interesting year for me. I got a girlfriend, started drinking a little, and tried a few things to see if I liked them or not

I was in football, I did not enjoy the
sport but my family wanted me to play it. The practices were not that bad, they weren’t very hard but they just dragged on. The seniors were very nice and they weren’t jackassess. There was only 5 of them and they all got along with everyone.

The freshmen games were a waste of time especially my grade because the JV team was pretty much the freshmen and only 2 sophomores and 2 juniors, ya we are a small school.

There is one game that I won’t ever forget because nobody saw it coming.
It was a freshmen game and they were more people than usual, the game wasn’t special we weren’t playing a extremely hard team but they were still a good team to play against.

We were down by one touchdown and had to run 80 more yards to get it. We did a fullback run play and it worked great. He busted through the line easily and ran as fast as he could. The defense safety was the only one that could stop him but the safety was half the fullback size and he knew that if he would try to hit him in the shoulder pads the safety would just get ran over so he chooses the next best option, his legs.

I bet some of you are thinking what’s gonna happen and some of you might be right or wrong but sadly the worse outcome happens.

The safety dove at the fullback feet and just as the fullback foot touches the ground in the end zone the safety’s helmet hit the full back’s leg and SNAP. Both his Fibula and tibia were broken. I could see it because both were sticking out of his skin.

Our coaches and teammates were shocked of what just happened. Nobody was expecting a freshman to get that hurt in a freshman game but hey its football.

Our trainer didn’t stand there for a moment, he ran the fastest anyone has seen him ran and let’s just say he was on the other side of the field when this happened he as soon as he saw what happened he was there first before anyone else.

The fullback was screaming for 5 minutes then he started to calm down a bit but still felt the pain. He wasn’t allowed to look at his leg because the trainer didn’t want him to pass out( my opinion I would have forced myself to pass out but I found out later that they don’t want you to just so you can talk to them).

The coaches already called 911 and the ambulance was there in 5 minutes, now that was fast because the hospital closes to us was a good 20 minutes drive but that ambulance got called in for an old woman near the game but she didn’t need to go with them.

When the ambulance arrived they got the full back on a stretcher and raced to the hospital.

The fullback’s dad ripped the opposing team’s coach a new one. He said how he should teach his players how to tackle  correctly and not stupidly and they were going to sue him but that never happened. His wife grabbed him by the ear just so they could leave for the hospital. It was funny seeing a grown man getting his ear pulled.

The safety just got away and went back to his side. He didn’t play anymore that game and he just stood there by himself. He obviously felt bad what he just done to the fullback. He was a freshman and didn’t mean to brake his leg but shit happens

Our coaches said we need to finish the game then we can head home. Us players huddled together and said let’s do it for him(fullback).

We won 21-14 and went home. The fullback missed two weeks of school and was in a wheelchair for four months and he did some sweet with things with it but that’s another topic for a different time.
